In some cases, you may need to share a VPN connection to connect a device, such as a TV, that does not natively support VPN apps.
The best way to share a VPN connection is by using a router. You can find more information in our article, How to Set Up a VPN Router. However, if you do not have a VPN router, you can also share the VPN through your PC.
Sharing a connection from the Windows PC
Open Settings on your Windows PC, then search for Mobile hotspot and open it.
We recommend setting up a 2.4 GHz network band, as this will ensure that your connection is visible on all devices.
Under the Properties, you can edit the network name, password, and band.
You can start the hotspot by tapping the Mobile hotspot toggle button.
After you start a hotspot, it's time to configure the connection to go through the VPN. To do that, navigate to your VPN client and activate the VPN connection. For more information about VPNs, please visit our Proxy and VPN article.
When the VPN connection is active, now you should navigate to the Control Panel, then to Network and Internet, and click on the Network and Sharing Center.
In the Left menu, click on Change adapter settings.
On the adapters page (Network Connections), right-click on the VPN adapter which has an active connection, select Properties, switch to the Sharing tab, and enable Internet Connection Sharing (Click on the checkbox for "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection).
After enabling the ICS, from the Home networking connection dropdown menu select the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter (in this case, it was "Local Area Connection* 10") and click on the OK button to confirm the choice.
Connecting a device to a shared VPN connection
To connect a device to a shared VPN connection, you should ensure that after you connect to the shared network, you are on the right IP address. The ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) has an IP address of 192.168.137.x.
We strongly recommend that after configuring each device, you go to some "What is my IP address" website, and check if you see the correct public IP address.
If the assigned IP address is not in the format of 192.168.137.x, please change the relevant settings from Automatic to Manual and apply the following parameters:
IP Address: 192.168.137.x (you should replace x with a number from 2-254 specifying a number specific to that device).
NOTE: You cannot set 2 different devices to the same IP address. Each device should have its unique IP address.
Gateway: 192.168.137.1
DNS: 8.8.8.8
DNS 2 (if requested): 8.8.4.4
Network prefix length (if requested): 24
Subnet Mask: Check the default value for your device
