In some test cycles you may be required to use the Test IO VPN that goes over the WireGuard in order to test the Customer app. In this article, we will explain how to set up the WireGuard, how to use it, and how to share the VPN connection.

Setting up WireGuard

To set up the WireGuard, you will need to download it first and install it on your PC or Smartphone. You can download the WireGuard through their website.

After you download and install the app, you should import the VPN configuration that will be provided in the test itself.

Importing configuration on Windows and macOS

On Windows, open the WireGuard app, click on the Import tunnel(s) from file, and select the .conf file that was provided in the Test Cycle.

On macOS, after installing the app, click on the WireGuard icon from the menu bar, select the Import Tunnel(s) from File.. button, and import the .conf file.

After importing the configuration, you can start the VPN by clicking on the Tunnel name, or by clicking on the Activate button in the WireGuard interface.

Importing configuration on iOS and Android

When you open the app on your iOS or Android phone, you should click on the + button, and import the configuration through:

  • The file or archive if you have a .conf file.

  • The QR code, if the QR code is available.

Afterward, you can activate the VPN by tapping on the toggle button.

Sharing the WireGuard Connection

Some platforms do not have the option to set up the WireGuard connection on themselves, and in this case, you will need to share your connection over your PC and then connect your device, to that hotspot. Please be aware that on connected devices, you should set the Static IP address which will be explained later in the article.

Sharing connection on Windows PC

Search and open Settings on your Windows PC. In the Settings, search for Mobile hotspot and open it. Under the Properties, you can edit the network name, password, and band.

We recommend setting up a 2.4 GHz network band, as this will ensure that your connection is visible on all devices.

You can start the hotspot by tapping the Mobile hotspot toggle button.

After you start a hotspot, now it is time to configure the connection to go through the WireGuard. To do that, navigate to the WireGuard and activate the VPN connection.

When the VPN connection is active, now you should navigate to the Control Panel, then to Network and Internet and click on the Network and Sharing Center.

In the Left menu, click on the Change adapter settings.

On the adapters page (Network Connections), right-click on the WireGuard Tunnel adapter, select Properties, switch to the Sharing tab, and enable Internet Connection Sharing (Click on the checkbox for "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection).

After enabling the ICS, from the Home networking connection dropdown menu select the Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter (in this case it was "Local Area Connection* 2") and click on the OK button to confirm the choice.

Connecting a device to a shared WireGuard Connection

To connect a device to a shared WireGuard connection, you should ensure that after you connect to the shared network, you are on the right IP address. The ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) has an IP address of 192.168.137.x.

We strongly recommend that after configuring each device, you go to some "What is my IP address" website, and check if you see the correct public IP address.

Connecting Android / Google TV

Navigate to the Network & Internet (WiFi) settings, and join the shared Network connection. When the connection is successful, ensure that the IP address of the connected network is in the range of 192.168.137.x. If not, navigate to the settings part of the connected network, and change IP Settings from DHCP to Static:

  • As an IP Address enter: 192.168.137.x (you should replace x with a number from 2-254 specifying a number specific to that device).
NOTE: You cannot set 2 different devices to the same IP address (for example: Your Android TV and Fire TV cannot be on the same IP such as 192.168.137.12). Each device should have its unique IP address.

  • The gateway should be set to 192.168.137.1

  • The network prefix length should be set to 24

  • DNS 1 can be set to 8.8.8.8

  • DNS 2 can be set to 8.8.4.4

Connecting Fire TV

When you tap on the shared Network connection to join it in Network settings, and you enter the password, DO NOT connect to the network, instead, tap on the Advanced button.

After you connect to the network, you can navigate to the Advanced Status page to check if the settings were applied successfully. You can do this by tapping on the "Play/Pause" button on the RCU to check the network status and then to Advanced.

Connecting LG (webOS) TV

On the Wi-Fi Connection screen, after you connect to the shared Network connection, open the Other Network Settings and then navigate to the Advanced Wi-Fi Settings.

If IPv6 is enabled you can disable it, proceed to the Edit button, and tap on it.

Disable the Set Automatically option by tapping on it, and configure:

  • IP Address enter: 192.168.137.x (you should replace x with a number from 2-254 specifying a number specific to that device).
NOTE: You cannot set 2 different devices to the same IP address (for example: Your Android TV and Fire TV cannot be on the same IP such as 192.168.137.12). Each device should have its unique IP address.

  • Subnet Mask you can leave to 255.255.0.0

  • The gateway should be set to 192.168.137.1

  • The DNS Server should be set to 8.8.8.8

After the changes are made, navigate and tap on the Connect button.

Connecting Samsung (Tizen) TV

Precondition: Before connecting your Samsung TV to the Shared network, please disable the WireGuard. Only the Mobile Hotspot should be active.

Navigate to the Wireless Connection screen, and connect to the shared Network connection.

Connection should be successful, and afterward please verify if the correct IP is assigned to the device. To do that, navigate to the Network settings, then open the Network Status and select the IP Settings. Verify that the IP is like 192.168.137.x (x=specific number assigned to your device).

If the IP is in format 192.168.137.x, you can proceed, activate the WireGuard client, and enable ICS as described here.

If the IP is not in format 192.168.137.x, then please configure it to be:

  • IP Address enter: 192.168.137.x (you should replace x with a number from 2-254 specifying a number specific to that device).
NOTE: You cannot set 2 different devices to the same IP address (for example: Your Android TV and Fire TV cannot be on the same IP such as 192.168.137.12). Each device should have its unique IP address.

  • Subnet Mask you can leave to 255.255.255.0

  • The gateway should be set to 192.168.137.1

  • The DNS Server should be set to 192.168.137.1
