Setting up a VPN on a router is a great way to ensure that you are connected to some specific location on some devices, such as Streaming ones, or Smart TVs, which do not support installing VPN apps.

Here’s a general guide on how to do it. Note that the exact steps may vary depending on your router’s model and the VPN service you’re using.

1. Choose a Compatible Router

Make sure your router supports VPN functionality. Some routers come with built-in VPN support, while others may need firmware updates or additional software. Routers from brands like Asus, Linksys, and Netgear often support VPN setups.

2. Select a VPN Service

Choose a VPN service that supports router configurations. Popular VPNs like ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark usually offer detailed guides for router setups.

3. Access Router Settings

  1. Connect to Your Router: Use a computer or device connected to your router’s network.

  2. Log In: Open a web browser and enter the router’s IP address (often something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). Log in with your router’s admin credentials.

4. Update Router Firmware (if needed)

Check if there’s a firmware update available for your router. Sometimes, you may need to update the firmware to get VPN functionality.

5. Configure VPN on Your Router

For Routers with Built-In VPN Support:

  1. Find VPN Settings: Navigate to the VPN section in your router’s admin interface. This might be under sections like “Advanced” or “Network.”

  2. Enter VPN Details: Input the VPN server address, your VPN username, and password. You might also need to configure other settings like the VPN protocol (e.g., OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP).

  3. Save and Apply: Save your settings and apply them.

For Routers Without Built-In VPN Support:

  1. Install Custom Firmware: Some routers need custom firmware to support VPNs. Follow the firmware’s installation instructions carefully.

  2. Configure VPN via Custom Firmware: Once installed, follow the firmware’s guide to configure the VPN. Typically, this involves entering similar VPN details as mentioned above.

6. Test Your VPN Connection

  1. Reconnect Devices: Reconnect your devices to the router.

  2. Check VPN Status: Use an IP-checking website or tool to verify that your VPN connection is active and working correctly.
