What is Discord?

Discord is a place where everyone can find a community that suits person’s interests. All is needed is to create an account and find the servers to join. Discord is a group-chatting platform originally built for gamers that has since used by many kinds of communities. It has boomed in popularity during the pandemic, as more people have worked, played games, and socialized online. Discord has communities from all fields of life: fan clubs, businesses, companies, book clubs, gaming communities, etc. The platform has more than 350 million registered users, out of which there are 150 million active users. Discord runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, iPadOS, Linux, and in web browsers.

Discord Glossary

Discord is divided into servers, each of which has its own members, topics, rules, and channels. Servers are the spaces on Discord. They are made by specific communities and friend groups. Any one can start a new server for free and invite their friends to it.
Servers are filled with text and voice channels. Each server usually has multiple channels, each of which is dedicated to a different topic or has different rules. In text channels users can post messages, upload files, and share images for others to see at any time. In voice channels, users can connect through a voice or video call in real time, and can share their screen.

Users can send private messages to other users as a direct message (DM), as well as start a voice or video call. Most DMs are one-on-one conversations, but users have the option to create a private group DM, with a maximum size of ten people. Group DMs are not public and require an invite from someone in the group.

Users can share their screen with other people who are in a server or a DM with them.
